Born Again - What Does It Take to Be Saved?
"Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.
Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’" John 3:1-7.
Furthermore, Jesus made it plain that He is the only way to salvation:
"Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” John 14 : 5-6.
What Is Salvation?
When man turned away from God and chose to allow Satan into this world, God took him out of Eden so that he could not live an eternal life in sin. Therefore, at the end of his natural life, man not only dies the first death - the death of the body - but also the second death - death into an eternity without God. This is also called 'the lake of fire'.
But God had a remedy for this situation. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
It was for this reason that Jesus suffered and died on the cross, and then He went into Satan's kingdom and came back with the keys of death and Hell. In Revelation 1:17-18, John the writer (generally believed to be John the apostle, writing at the end of his life in exile on the Island of Patmos) records the encounter with Jesus that led to the 'revelation of Jesus' he describes in the book: "And He placed His right hand on me, saying, "Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades."
How Can A Person Be Saved?
By accepting God's offer of salvation through His Son. Saint Paul said in Romans 10:9-10. “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes and becomes righteous (right with God); and with the mouth he confesses and becomes saved.”
If you want to be saved, you need to search your heart and come before the Lord in prayer. This is the Sinner's Prayer which you need to pray aloud to God from your heart:
The Sinner's Prayer
I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness.
I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe that He died
for my sin and that you raised Him to life.
I want to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord,
from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will.
If you have spoken the above prayer aloud and from your heart, Welcome to God's eternal family! You have begun a most wonderful journey in which Jesus promises always to be with you. NOTE: This does not mean that life will suddenly become easy - it won't. What it does mean is that the power that raised Jesus from the dead now lives in you. As you bring God into your life and keep right with Him, He will guide you though any problems you have to face.
You need to stay close to the Lord by reading His word - the Bible - and by keeping His commandments. If you have difficulty with reading the Bible, open your heart to God and ask Him to help you become enthusiastic - believe me, it will happen: I am speaking from personal experience. Fellowship in a good, Bible-based church will also help you. Be aware that many churches in these times are in apostasy (which is abandonment of core principles of faith): avoid them. Pray for guidance or seek advice if possible from a true Christian believer.
You will also find on here links to a number of good, bible-based, online church websites where you can watch weekly sermons and access more information about the Christian Walk, together with listings of online ministries and online bibles and bible studies. Even if you do not have a Bible and cannot get one, you can still access scripture and bible commentaries via the web - see the links on our navigation bar at left. Above all, whatever your situation or wherever you are, you will not have to walk this path alone.
